A tradional Kerala dish, Erissery is a must have for the Onam Sadya.

2 cups water
½ cup coconut (grated)
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
4 green chillies (slit)
3 garlic cloves
Salt to taste
For Seasoning
2 teaspoon coconut oil
½ teaspoon mustard seeds
4 button onions (sliced)
A few curry leaves
4 teaspoon coconut (grated)
How To
Cook the pumpkin in 2 cups of water. Coarsely grind coconut, turmeric powder, salt and garlic with 1 tablespoon of water and add to the cooked pumpkin. Mix well and cook on low flame for 5 minutes. Remove from fire and keep aside. In another pan, heat the oil and splutter mustard seeds. Add onion, curry leaves and grated coconut and sauté until coconut is slightly browned. Pour this seasoning into the curry. Serve erissery with red rice along with all the other must have items of a proper onam sadya.

Notes: The usual recipe calls for the addition of black-eyed beans. I have not used it since none of us at home have a special liking for it.
